The phone was picked up on the second ring.

The voice was hoarse, almost gravelly in a way, and it certainly wasn’t Jess.

“Who is this?” Tyrone said carefully, standing to his feet as he looked behind him. He could just barely hear the shower running from back in the master bathroom, so obviously Hailey wouldn’t hear him.

“Wouldn’t you like to know…Ty. Ty, is that Tyrone, my bitch of a wife’s-friend’s-tubby-hubby? Is it you that set me up to get iced?”

He kept his voice calm as he asked, “Where’s Jess?”

“Your little bitch and his pal are taking a dirt nap at the moment,” the voice growled, “Would you like to come and join them?”

“You just messed up,” he said quietly.

“No,” Edith, it had to be her, him, whatever, said. “No YOU messed up!” The voice was a rasp now as Edith coughed several times into the phone. “I don’t know why, and I don’t care, but you tried to have me killed and didn’t have the balls to do it yourself. So you and I are going to have a few words when I make my way back.”

“You’re not going to make it back,” Tyrone said, hitting the END button as he heard Edith about to say something. Closing his eyes he inhaled, thinking quick and hard as he then looked in his list of contacts, thumbing through his phone as he thought about who to call, and who would be available on short notice.

Finally he found the number he was looking for. With one finger he hit the button to make the call. Edith had called him out. It was time to form his reply.
