1) As a human being you’re already hardwired for networking.
Networking isn’t all about using other as pawns and making yourself look good. It’s about building stable relationship with others that will benefit the both of you. This is a chance to get to know others that might be able to help you with a job search or can augment your search in some way that you might not have thought about. By networking your chances of finding success in the job market can increase exponentially with each new contact. Just be yourself and people will decide whether they can help you or not.
2) You probably already have a bigger network than you realize.
Even if you don’t think you have anyone that can help you out take a second and do a mental inventory of all the people in your life. After that, assess their skills and what they might know about the type of work you’re seeking. Chances are you’ll have already met a great number of people that could be of tremendous help to you. Even if you don’t know all of them particularly well, don’t be shy about tapping them as resources when you need to.
3) Focus on those relationships and making them stronger.
Always let the people you contact know the truth about what you’re doing. There’s no need to rush into the whole “I’ll help you if you help me” routine. Get to know them, establish a real link, and then maintain it.
